DashM8 vs TeslaMate

TeslaMate is free, open source, and the reason a lot of this category exists. DashM8 is closer to being the hosted version of the same idea than a rival to it.

What TeslaMate does well

It is genuinely free, the data is yours on your own machine, the Grafana dashboards are deep, and the community around it has solved problems nobody else documented. If you are comfortable with Docker and want nothing between you and your own database, it is hard to beat and we would not try to talk you out of it.

What it costs in practice

A server that stays up, a database that gets backed up, a reverse proxy and a certificate, upgrades when the API changes, and a phone experience that is a Grafana page in a browser. None of that is hard, all of it is time, and it is the reason hosted alternatives exist at all.

DashM8 runs that for you: nothing to install, a native iOS app, push notifications, alerts that name the car, and support when Tesla changes something. In exchange you pay for it and your telemetry lives on our servers in Germany rather than in your house — which is a real trade-off, and we would rather state it than bury it.

Credit where it is due

TeslaMate's approach shaped what owners expect from this kind of tool, DashM8 included. Import from a TeslaMate database is on our list and is not shipped yet; when it is, it will be documented properly rather than announced.
